HOSTEL SUPPORT FUND – OYAM MEMORIAL HALL
YANGWARAK 3, PANCHTHAR, NEPAL
The Need
Oyam Memorial Hall Hostel was opened on 1st May 2023 with a boarding capacity for 50 school children (25 girls and 25 boys), enabling them to stay during the week and avoid having to walk 2-3 hours each way from home every day to and from school across difficult terrain and often in inclement weather. 46 places are filled at present and the cost of a month’s meals per child is £21.
Sadly, an average of 10 children come from families who are unable to afford this amount and these children must carry on living at home with the extremely long walk at the start and end of each day, whilst their peers are able to benefit from the hostel’s superb facilities.
The Intent
We are establishing a Hostel Support Fund (HSF) which will subsidise the cost of feeding an average of 10 children from those underprivileged families who would struggle to fund the hostel meals themselves, thus enabling the children to weekly board at the hostel.
How much do we need?
The full cost of feeding 10 children at the hostel is currently £2,500 per year, or £210 per month. We aim to raise £25,000 for this project.
How do we address this?
Through ‘HELP FOR NEPAL’ (Registered Charity in England and Wales, Charity Number: 1186858), our intention is to seek one-time donations in the UK and worldwide, establishing the HSF in Nepal. Funds raised will be transferred from the Help For Nepal charity into Oyam school’s bank account in Nepal. The funds are then held in the Nepal Government’s Bank as capital, earning interest annually which will provide the funding for subsidising the food costs for 10 children. We already have several generous pledges.
Management & Assurance
The HSF fund will be managed by the School Governing Body, consisting of parents, teachers, representatives of students, and individuals from local authority, all headed up by an elected chair. The Headmaster of Oyam School acts as the Secretary for the School Governing Body. The whole process is transparent, and the School Governing Body scrutinises the account as well as Oyam School being independently assured annually by the Government authority.
Background
Oyam Memorial Hall Project (OMHP) built hostel accommodation to house 50 children overnight throughout the school week who otherwise have to walk 2-3 hours each way to get to and from school daily.
The building is a fantastic testament to the power of collaboration and coordination, fuelled by your generosity. Driven by GIFT Trustees and the OMHP team, with the expertise of our partners at Pahar Trust Nepal, Hello World, and CAIRN, and the support of The QOGLR, the Gurkha Welfare Trust, Anthony Knights Foundation, Hong Kong Ex-Servicemen Association, and other charities, we have built a Memorial Hall which provides security and comfort for 50 children (Year 8, aged 13 – year 12, aged 18)
Additionally, a public internet hub that benefits the whole community and a wonderful library help give the children a chance of a brighter future. The Memorial Hall is built on foundations capable of supporting a third floor and with the latest earthquake-resistant building is a place of study and safety for generations to come.
With the generosity of our supporters, individually or as a charity, and the expertise of our partners, we accomplished something quite extraordinary (a £250,000 project) in this remote region of Nepal. The facility is now managed by the school governing body and staff, with local Government leaning in to support. Presently, a total of 24 girls and 22 boys are living in the hostel.
How can you help?
You can help by donating to this cause, offering support, or simply encouraging others to lean in. Your trust and support are invaluable in bringing smiles to the faces of these children, ultimately enhancing the lives of the children at Oyam, with whom we routinely have dialog through virtual means.
Please help where you can. Just £21 would feed a child for a month; £105 would enable 10 children to have a month’s food at a 50% subsidy; £210 would feed 10 children for a month and £2,500 would feed 10 for the full school year.
Thank you in advance for your generous support.
